Incident Response Tabletop Exercises

Organizations that have never practiced incident response make critical mistakes under pressure — notifying the wrong people, failing to preserve evidence, or making containment decisions that accelerate attacker impact. Tabletops cost far less than the mistakes they prevent.

Teams that never practice incident response struggle with coordination and decision-making during real breaches.

Test Your Incident Response Before a Real Crisis

Help Your Team Make Better Decisions Under Pressure

Incident Response Tabletop Exercises are facilitated, scenario-based simulations that stress-test your organization's incident response plans, communication protocols, and decision-making processes under realistic conditions — without the real-world consequences of an actual breach. Our exercises surface gaps in process, tooling, communication, and authority before an actual incident exposes them.

Stress-testing a university’s incident response plan

When a new CISO joined a private university in the Northeast, he needed to know whether the school’s incident response and crisis management plans would actually hold up — and to satisfy the testing requirements of the school’s cyber insurance carrier. Cyber Castellum designed and facilitated a tabletop exercise to find out.

5 Depts

Scenario types tested — one physical, one cyber
0 Fault
Open, no-fault environment built for honest discussion

The challenge

The university needed to train faculty and staff to respond to real incidents and emergencies, while also meeting the cyber insurance carrier’s incident-testing requirements. The exercise had to cover both local, day-to-day scenarios and larger, organization-wide events — and get genuine participation from every team involved.

Our approach

  • Facilitated an open, no-fault tabletop discussion built around a scripted scenario, designed to surface real strengths and gaps in policy and procedure.
  • Assessed the university’s ability to prepare for, protect against, and respond to both incidents and emergencies.
  • Brought response team members from IT, public safety, operations, legal, and communications to the same table.
  • Guided discussion with targeted questions and live injection points — new details dropped into the scenario mid-exercise to keep the conversation moving and test real-time decision-making.

What it validated

  • Strategic decision-making around the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and data — alongside the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Where recovery procedures and roles were accurate, and where response plans needed revision.
  • Security and privacy impacts tied to a significant incident or emergency, raised across every department in the room.

The results

The exercise exposed real strengths and gaps in the university’s current plans, giving them a clear roadmap to update procedures and improve future response. It also gave leadership, auditors, and insurers documented proof that plans and policies are in place and actively practiced.
